Sydney Gerlach - 2023 Mills Elementary Teacher of the Year

Hi my name is Sydney Gerlach. I have been with Owasso Public Schools for four years and I teach fifth grade at Mills Elementary. And this is year 6 of teaching for me. I have been teaching fifth grade, fifth grade is definitely my jam and it's all I've ever taught and all I hope to teach. My favorite thing about teaching is definitely the relationships, the relationships with coworkers, relationships with families, but my favorite is definitely the relationships with my students. Being able to see them learning grow is definitely something that brings me joy right now and in years to come. I am a firm believer that we are always learning and if you're not learning you're not growing and I think that I am strengthening the teaching profession by showing up every day and showing that I love my job. I look forward to looking at the little things in life with teaching whether that's a smile from a student or being able to help them grasp the concept or being able to see former students performing or playing in a sporting event and I think those strong relationships with family and Community helped build the teaching profession. I believe that teaching is the best job on the planet. Being able to see students learn and grow in my classroom and throughout the year for years to come and I believe that an outstanding teacher is one that shows love to students, if they don't feel loved they aren't willing normally to be teachable and so I think that an outstanding teacher shows but respect to students as well and and I think them knowing that they have somebody that always has their back and every situation in life makes an outstanding teacher. Being a teacher at Owasso Public Schools has meant the world to me. I have always looked at Owasso as a great District. The collaboration along with the relationships that I felt built with my peers is been phenomenal. I'm Sydney Gerlach and I am in Owasso Ram.
